Make Foundation Last Longer

13 May

A friend of mine just gave me a great tip on making her foundation last longer and she swears by it, so I wanted to pass this along. In order to double the life of your foundation, squirt a few drops of alcohol free facial toner into the container. Shake a bit and then apply as usual. The cleansing and moisturizing ingredients in the toner will keep the foundation from drying out and cracking. Now your foundation is a toner as well. ;) So you can reap the rewards of both products and save time by doing so.

The new eye cream…butter!

12 May

Well the idea of using butter as an eye cream in a pinch is not so new. Women in Ethiopia have been using butter as a beautifying agent for years. Ethiopian women have cherished pure organic butter for its skin smoothing capabilities.

Organic butter contain lactic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid that draws water from the slower level of the skin into the top layer of the skin. This locks in the moisture and boosts cell production to keep skin looking healthy, refreshed and glowing.

Americas top models have used this method of eye cream when in a pinch and needing to freshen up. So next time you are out dining in a restaurant and feel an urge to freshen up, go to the restroom, and don’t forget the butter! ;)

Beauty Bits….

30 Apr

Just in case you did not know….

When it gets dark outside, use a hint of gloss with a tad of dark color on your lips for a sheer natural look.  No lip liner is required.

For a bold look that goes a long way, apply a dark, metallic shimmer shadow to your entire lid.

For smaller eyes use the lightest hade of shadow you have on the brow bone to highlight and open your eyes and make them look larger.

What color is best for you?

29 Apr

When you stand if front of a makeup counter in any department store the color selection for any product seems limitless.  Sometimes I find that the people behind the counters just want to sell me whatever they can make the most commission off of whether it works for me or not.  I always want to go into one of those cosmetic departments knowing what I need and the color I want before being bombarded by salespeople. So how do you know which colors would work for you?

The good news is that you can pretty much wear any color you want, as long as you pick the right shade. To do this you need to know two things:  The first is your hair color.  This shows the depth or brightness of shade that will flatter you best, the lighter your hair, the lighter the shade that will suit you.  The darker the tone the darker he shade that suits you.

The second thing you need to know is your skin tone.  This helps tell you what shades of color will suit you best.  To determine your skin tone, the best place to look is on the inside of your wrists.  This is your true skin tone.  It is the area on your body that you can check in a snap as to your actual skin color.  Sure beats trying to check pantie lines at the makeup counter.  To determine your skin tone hold your wrist over a white sheet of paper.  If your skin shade is white, pink, blue or gray it means you have a cool tone and need cool shades (white, pink, blue and grays).  If your skin tone appears yellow or brown, it means you have a warm skin tone and should stick to warmer shades.

Some examples to help determine your color choices

Blonde or light brown and cool skin toneEye shadow shades would be: slate gray, sky or ice blue, lilacs, plums, navy.  Mascara shade should be a gray, stay away from black as it would be too harsh.  Your best blusher would be a rose pink and your best lipsticks would be in the color range of sugary pinks, lilacs, heathers or pinky browns.

Blonde or light brown hair with warm skin toneEye shadow shades would be warm browns, shimmery golds and greens, pale yellows or peach.  Mascara should be in the brown family.  Blushers would be apricot or beige family.  Your best lipsticks would be golden brown, corals, peach pink or bronze.

Red hair and pale skinEye shadow shades would be in the peach, orange, khaki, light green and bronze family.  Your best choice for blush would be in the beigey pink or light apricot range.  The best lipstick for you would be orangey red, heathery pink, terra cotta brown or apricot.  Your mascara choice would be in the brown family.

Dark hair and pale skin – Your best eye shadow colors would be in the cool gray, ivory, silver and rich plum family.  Your blush would be more towards a rose pink, and your lipstick would be fuschia pink, crimson red, deep plum or mauve.  Your mascara would be black/brown.

Dark hair and warm skin – Your best eye shadow color is olive green, rust, beige, chocolate brown, earthy red and orange.  Your best blush choice would be light brown or apricot and a bright pink for accent on cheekbones.  Your best lipstick choice is in the rust, raisin, warm chocolate brown or orange red family. Your mascara should be dark brown and you can get away with a black.

Light black skin and dark hair – The best eye shadow choice for you is charcoal gray, bitter chocolate brown, pale pink, lilac and sky blue.  Your mascara should be black or brown black. Your blush should be shimmery pink, or a camel shade if using dark eye colors.  Lipstick should be nude, bitter chocolate brown, pale shimmery pink or a warm brown.

Dark black skin and dark hair – The best choice for you is navy blue, deep plum, dark or reddish brown and golds for eye shadow.  Mascara should be black.  Blusher should be in the plum or dark brown family. Your lipstick should be raisin brown, deep or glossy plum, deep red or chocolate brown.

Using this a guide you are sure to get the right look for your skin tone and hair color.  So next time you go to the makeup counter know what you want before you get there.

The proper way to apply lipstick

29 Apr

If you do not want to always reapply your lipstick throughout the day, you can try my favorite lipstick that is made with fruits and botanicals and remains throughout the day, or you can try the following steps so your lips look great all day long! Want to know what it is?  Just shoot me an email and ask. :)

  1. Apply a cream such as chapstick or an all natural lip balm that is VEGAN certified (I have just the one)  (it has no bees wax in it and is vegan certified) to the lips.  Using a soft toothbrush, gently remove dead skin cells by brushing gently across the lips.
  2. Apply your foundation as you normally would, putting a thin layer across your lips too.
  3. Apply your lip liner that matches either your lip color or your lipstick exactly.  To make a straight line, rest your elbow on a tabletop.  Draw from your cupids bow (center of the upper lip) to one corner, sticking just outside the natural line of your lips.  Once complete color the rest of your lips with the liner.
  4. Apply your lipstick with a lip brush, blending it from the middle down to the corners of the mouth.  If you are using a very bright color, make sure you go right into the corner.
  5. Blot your lips with a tissue.  Now reapply another coat of your lip color.  Blot again, add lip sealant or lip gloss if desired.
To make lips look bigger – Draw your liner along the outside natural line of your lips.  Shimmery lip color makes lips look larger so choose a shimmer, or dab a little gold eyeshadow in the center of your lips and blend outwards.
For sheer natural lips – Skip the liner and apply your lipstick directly on your lips using a brush.  If you want your lipstick to stay on longer and not run into the creases around your lips, choose a liner that matches your lips and apply it over the lip line and then add a sheer gloss.  By the way, smokers have the lines around their lips more then non-smokers because their lips dry out faster from smoking.  Also, glossy lipsticks are more prone to bleeding than matte or long lasting colors.  Reds bleed more then browns or pinks.  Reds are more prone to melting faster.
To even the thickness of top and bottom lips – Do not try to crate a fake lip line right away, it will look terrible. Instead use a foundation over the lips as mentioned above and draw a line along the outer edge of the lip line on the smaller lip.  Fill in both lips with the liner and cover with lipstick or gloss.
If you have chapped lips – Make sure your lip color does not contain camphor or menthol, this only makes them more chapped and dries them out.  Start your lip color application by first removing the dead skin cells using a toothbrush as mentioned above or a damp washcloth.  The follow the advice above.  Make sure your lip color has an spf of at least 15!

How to Apply Makeup

3 Apr

I am always asked the best way to apply makeup of various sorts.  I thought if I gave you my tips and tricks that can help you in your application.  Almond shape eyes are considered to be the ideal.  Since we not all born with almond shaped eyes, when making up eyes, one tries with the help of light and dark shades to make the necessary changes to give the eyes an almond appearance.Eyeshadow:  The following steps are followed in the application of eyeshadow shades.

  1. Using a fine, blunt ended brush, gently apply the base eyeshadow to the entire lid from the inside to the outside corner and from then base of the lashes to the eyelid crease.
  2. If the eyes need extra definition, a deeper shade is blended into the crease line.  This gives depth to the eyes.
  3. The brow bone is highlighted with a light shade.  This gives the eyes a wide, open look.  The color is applied to the most prominent area and blended up towards the brow and down to where the contour curves down, toward the eyelid creases. Before using them on the lids, always test the colors on the back of your hand to see the intensity.  You can use 3-4 colors, provided they are blended well.

Rule of thumb: pale tones emphasize, while deep sooty shades define.Eyeliners: Using an eyeliner is a clear way to define the shape of the eye.  There are a variety of eyeliners in the market.  I tend to lean towards pencil, it is the most natural looking.  Liquid liners give too much of a definition.  But of course it is all personal preference, so the choice is yours. Liquid Eyeliner Application

  1. Test the liner on the back of your hand, the amount of pressure you should use as each eyeliner brush is different in density and stiffness. Unless you are a real artist, it is best to steady your elbow on a flat surface.
  2. Work from the inside of the eye to the outside corner and keep the line light and even.  If you stop at the corner of the eye, the effect will be a round and wide eye.  If you continue the line and sweep it up and out, you would get a more exotic look.
  3. Finally, smudge the edges with a cotton swab to soften the lines.

Pencil Eyeliner ApplicationPencils can be used in the same manner to define or extend the shape of the eyes, but they give a softer, more natural line.  Keep them sharpened and ready for use, as blunted or broken points can spoil the whole effect.

  1. To use a pencil liner, start at the inner corner of the top lid and work your way to the outer edge of the lid, keeping the pencil as close to the lash line as possible.  The darker the color you use, the smaller the eye will appear.
  2. For the bottom lid, start at the inner corner and work your way toward the outer edge once again.
  3. Some pencils come with a smudge tool on the opposite side.  Use it to soften the line and make it look more natural.  If you do not have a smudge tool on the other side of your pencil a cotton swab will do just fine.  Make sure the swab is the type for makeup and not your ears.  As the one for ears tends to leave behind some fizz and you do not want to get that in your eye.

Mascara Application

  1. For best results in applying mascara, look down first and brush the top lashes from the roots downwards.
  2. Then look up and brush the top lashes upwards.
  3. Then still looking up, brush the color on the lower lashes.
  4. Wait for a minute for them to dry, and apply a second coat in the same fashion.
  5. Finally brush them with a clean dry brush to separate the lashes from clumping together, if indeed they are clumped.

To remove mascara:  Close your eyes and roll a cotton swab dipped in a makeup cleanser over the lashes, taking the mascara down onto a tissue.  Repeat until all the mascara is gone. I hope this information is helpful in your makeup application.  If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them with our readers.Add to Technorati Favorites AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Our Image Starts from Within

23 Mar

How we feel about ourselves is the image we project to others. With that in mind, let’s talk about a way to project a positive image for this Mother’s Day. Whether you are planning an evening out with your kids or a special dinner at home, preparing for Mother’s Day should start in the quiet of your own surroundings with these simple steps:

  1.  Prep your canvas: Without a properly prepped canvas, your make-up application will look good at best. Let’s go for fantastic! Start preparing for your evening with NutriMinC® RE9® REgain Illuminating Enzyme Peel. This product has Alpha Hydroxy Acids which help renew cells, firm the skin and give the appearance of smoother lines. Sloughing off dead skin cells is a great start to a refreshed, glowing complexion. Now, follow up with your skin care system to complete the preparation process.
  2. Prime your canvas: Try Virtual Illusion Makeup Primer to tone, smooth and minimize the visual appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Apply with a cosmetic wedge and allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding with the make-up application. This primer will extend the life of your make-up while visually minimizing enlarged pores. Primers are a must-have in your make-up kit!
  3. Apply foundation: Using Line Defiance Makeup, apply foundation with a cosmetic wedge in the ‘T’-Zone. Using a very light concealer, highlight your bone structure (cheekbones, bridge of the nose and across the chin), then blend and set with a loose powder. Now, emphasize your contours using the No Sun Intended, Bronzing Powder. Remember that a highlight brings an area forward and a contour causes an area to recede. When planning your make-up for an evening event, you need to go for the gusto! This is simple to do – just use a heavier hand when applying your contours.
  4. For the eyes: Try the ‘Smokey’ eye technique from my DVD, Impact Your Image. This is truly an elegant, classic look for a special evening! Focus on using darker shadows (i.e. Inkling, Smudge, and Charade About Face Eye Shadow’s) to enhance your eyes and add a touch of drama. But you’re not done yet… to top off the Smokey eye for a special evening, you MUST apply false eyelashes! Try the individual lashes from a drug store in a medium or long length. If the idea of applying individual lashes gives you hives, buy full lashes and cut them in half. Be sure to apply mascara to your own lashes BEFORE you apply the false eyelashes. (Side Note: NEVER apply mascara to false eyelashes.)
  5. Now – go for the finale! Top off the look with a neutral lip. Remember, eyes OR lips… you choose which you want to emphasize. Try Twig or Illusion About Face Lipstick and overlay the lipstick with Copper About Face Sheer Shine lip gloss.

I have eyelashes!

18 Mar

Yes it’s true, I have eyelashes. While most of you are reading this and saying, sure you do, everyone has eye lashes, you just do not understand. I had the shortest eye lashes on the planet to the point where it looked like I had singed them off at some time in my life. A friend had tried using this product that is touted as making your lashes thicken, grow and cementing the lashes into the lids so they do not fall out.

So I tried this product thinking, no way is this going to work for me. Without waivering in the thought about the slightest possibility that this just may work, ritually each morning before I would apply my makeup, I would line my eyes with this clear gel that comes in a mascara type applicator. I would line both the upper and lower lids along the hair follicles that would have been my lashes.

After waiting and waiting for something to happen, (mind you I have been using this for 2 weeks now) someone actually noticed my lashes! I could hardly believe it. I have lashes now and I am going to buy a ton of this stuff to make sure I always have lashes! Of course I am still going to use the mascara that I have, but at least now my lashes are noticeable. It’s called Virtual Illusion Lash Enhancer and it’s not terribly priced.

The Contest is On

29 Feb

Ok folks, here are the 2 top stories submitted. The idea is that you guys vote for the best one and that person will receive free products that were listed in the previous email. The way you vote is by posting your comment. Good luck to Susan and Debbie!

First Story:

On my 10th wedding anniversary and just weeks after the birth of my second child I was called by Weight Watchers to come into New York City for a photo shoot. (I had submitted my story a year earlier) Talk about incentive to lose the last few pounds!

I live in NJ so I brought my best friend. The first part of the day we spent at the photo shoot being completely pampered —

manicure, pedicure, facial, make-up, hair and visiting the wardrobe and accessory room. I have never been treated so well in my entire life and it was just an amazing experience! I learned make-up tips for my coloring, hair tips and styles for my face, and learned all about my body type and style tips from the profesional stylist.

Then, it was the photoshoot — how embarrassing! Standing in front of a professional photographer, music blasting in the background and a group of people watching and cheering. I never felt so humbled yet beautiful before in my entire life. (My Success Story is in the archives of the WW’

s website.)

Susan

Second Story

I had just started working as a makeup artist at a large East coast retailer in New York City when this beautiful woman walked up to me and asked if I could suggest a new palette for her since we were approaching the spring season. She was very attractive, sweet and spoke with a slight accent that I could not detect. She had the most gorgeous dark brown eyes and beautiful long brunette hair and a figure that most woman would be envy of. We went through a bunch of variations of colors that she might consider using on her olive colored skin. At the end of her consultation, she purchased just about everything I reviewed with her, including skin care since she complained of a t-zone problem. Her purchase was a fairly substantial, and this being the start of what I hoped would be a successful career in the cosmetic industry, I was very happy. It seemed my customer was also very happy to be spending it. Before she left, she leaned in towards me and whispered, “would it surprise you if I told you I was a man?” I was shocked, I hardly believed it, my jaw dropped and “she” smiled. I certainly was not about to ask for proof! As she walked away I noticed many a couple of the male consultants from the men’s department right around the corner from where I was, staring at her just about salivating. I wish I could tell them that “she” was not all that “she” appeared to be, but I did not have the heart. My girlfriend from another counter came up to me afterwards and told me she was watching the entire transaction from afar. She knew the “woman” as “Rob”in. She told me that she had been a regular customer of hers for a while and she was waiting for the look on my face when I was told that “she” was really a “he”. I did not disappoint! To this day, probably the strangest thing that happened to me on the job.
